Pros - there are not ribbons to purchase and load into the machine, they are less expensive to produce each label / tag.

Cons - Direct thermal labels and tags are not as crisp as a thermal transfer.  Direct media tends to fade over time when exposed to sunlight, high temperatures, or heavy lighting.

Direct thermal printing is best when used for temporary use such as high turnover inventory and when high quality is not an issue.
